TURTLE PROTECTION IN GABON
During
winter season 2007-08 the Irish government
supported Aventures Sans Frontieres and the
Wildlife Conservation Society with a € 15,000 grant to protect the
internationally-important Mayumba beach in southern Gabon for
Leatherback turtles. This funding was obtained following leatherback publicity activities by the Sea
Turtle Trust and on foot of evidence from
satellite tracking by University College Cork that turtles feeding
in Irish waters migrate south to the West African coast and may nest
there.
